Born in Fort Plain, Bud Fowler became the first African American to play professional baseball when he joined a team in New Castle, Pennsylvania in 1878.

Bud played for 20 different teams, shuffled repeatedly due to mixed reactions to his race.

After a color line was drawn in baseball, Bud worked at managing, organizing and playing for Negro League teams.
