Irving Baxter
won the Olympic pole vault in Paris, 1900
when he entered the competition last minute.
Two entrants had left the field thinking
the competition had been postponed and
another refused to compete on Sunday.
Baxter also
won the gold medal for the high jump and
silver medals for the standing high jump,
standing long jump and standing triple
jump.
Baxter had
his greatest athletic career success with
the high jump, winning the U.S. national
championship several times.
