Herkimer native
Lou Ambers took up boxing as a career
during the Great Depression. In 1932,
he went pro and was undefeated for his
first 35 fights. In 1936, he defeated
Tony Cansoneri at Madison Square Garden
for the world lightweight title.
Ambers earned
his nickname "The Herkimer Hurricane"
with his winning pro record 88
of 102 fights. He has been inducted into
the International Boxing Hall of Fame
in Canastota, N.Y.
