Elihu Root was born in Clinton, NY in 1845. At age 19, he graduated first in his class from Hamilton College.

In 1867, he graduated from law school at New York University and set himself up as a notable lawyer.

Root had little political experience when he was appointed Secretary of War by President McKinley. This did not stop him from accruing many notable accomplishents and praise from his peers.

After his position as Secretary of War, Root had little time to relax before President Roosevelt offered him the position of Secretary of State. He excelled at this position as well.

Root's determination to achieve international peace and promote international arbitration earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912.
