John MacDonald was born in Sharon, Penn. in 1916. His family moved to Utica when he was a young boy and he graduated from Utica Free Academy. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1938 and a year later received his Master's from Harvard.

He began his writing career after joining the army in 1940, serving in the Office of Strategic Services in the Burma-China-India theatre. Ten years later his first novel, The Brass Cupcake, was published.

MacDonald's most well-known character, "Travis McGee," is featured in over 20 of his novels. His work has also been the inspiration for several movies, perhaps most notably Cape Fear, which was based on his novel The Executioners.
