Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, NY in 1852. He established his first five-cent store in Utica, NY in 1879. The store was a failure, but that did not stop him from finding success the same year in the opening of a five and ten-cent store in Lancaster, PA.

More stores were opened, and they spread throughout the United States and also to several foriegn countries. In 1913, the Woolworth Building was built. It was the tallest building in the world at that time. Woolworth died in 1919.
