Gregory Jarvis was born August 24, 1944 in Detroit, Mich.

Jarvis attended and graduated from Mohawk Central High School in Mohawk, NY. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of New York at Buffalo and his Master's degree from West Coast University in California.

Jarvis was chosen to be a payload specialist for the infamous Challenger mission which exploded during launch in 1986. As a payload specialist, Jarvis was trained by his company to manage data collection (payload) during the mission.
