Ward Hunt studied law and
upon admission to the bar in 1831 established
himself as a lawyer in Utica, NY for 31
years. In 1844 Hunt was elected Mayor
of Utica. He attempted to gain a seat
in the Supreme Court in 1853, but failed.
However, in 1872 he was finally appointed
by President Grant.
Hunt's career saw him take
on such roles as New York assemblyman
and New York Court of Appeals chief judge.
He retired from the Supreme Court in 1882
and died approximately four years later.
