Henry Halleck was born in
Westernville, N.Y. in 1815. He enrolled
in the US military academy and graduated
third in his class. He stayed at the academy
as an assistant professor of engineering.
Halleck was noted for his
gallant participation in several military
episodes during the Mexican War.
In 1861, Halleck was appointed
major-general at the start of the American
Civil War. His failure to take responsibility
for his decisions and poor sense of strategy
led to his resignation and replacement
by Ulysses S. Grant.
