BIO
Clara Barton was born on
Christmas Day in 1821. As a young woman,
she pursued teaching in the Oxford, Massachusetts
area. After teaching for over ten years,
Barton turned to furthering her own education
and attended the Clinton Liberal Institute
in 1850 for a year
During the Civil War, Barton
volunteered to collect and distribute
supplies for wounded soldiers. She received
permission to deliver needed supplies
directly to the front line
After the war, during a
trip to recover her health, Barton came
across the Red Cross, which she observed
in action during the Franco-Prussian war.
From then on, Clara's ambition was to
bring the Red Cross to the United States.
Barton's mission was a success
and, in turn, she became the first president
of the American Red Cross.
