Quick BIO

Mstislav Rostropovich entered the Moscow Conservatory at age sixteen. He gained recognition as a cellist when, in 1945, he won the gold medal in a Soviet competition for young musicians. Rostropovich became an icon of Russian music and grew to be internationally known.

Rostropovich had conflicts with the Soviet government and faced censorship of his work. Eventually he and his wife were stripped of their Soviet citizenship.

Today, Rostropovich is a leading conductor in the Western World. His more recent compositions are on the Sony Classical label.
