Quick Bio

J.R. Monterose, a saxophone player who grew up in Utica, died in 1993. He left Utica in the 1950s, returning in 1977. He taught and performed in the area, as well as in New York City and international festivals. He was also artist-in-residence at Utica College for five years.

During his career Monterose played with the Buddy Rich and Lionel Hampton bands, among others. He recorded with Charlie Mingus and Kenny Dorham’s Jazz Prophets and created 10 disks as leader of various groups.
