The following letter requires a response. Sunday, Aug 27, 2006 The Observer Dispatch To all who have contacted me during the past years and spoken well of my work as mayor, Ellen and I thank you. My heart has never left the hometown I care about. Because much continues to be said about our city, and because of my concern for its future I offer some views and comments. We must not waste the potential our city has. We must set high goals and strive with noble efforts to excite the spirit, faith and hope of all citizens. To help Utica prosper and become an enviable place to live, we need to enhance our city's image. Although there is much to do that requires large sums of money our city doesn't have, there is also very much that can be done with what we already have to work with. The physical appearance of every part of our city is basic and vital. We need to roll up our sleeves. Volunteers will gladly help dedicated leaders. Our city is grateful for the many civic-minded groups and individuals who involve themselves with community concerns and the betterment of our neighborhoods. Every public facility in every part of our city must be attended to and made adventurous, exciting and a showplace that tempts people to make use of and enjoy. Public places can offer free happy time activities and special treats for all ages. We have the needed assets that can forge a tremendous future, with determined resolution, vision, and inspiration, creative imagination and with eyes that can see what needs to be done and a heart that cares, we can jumpstart our city. We can improve our economy, diminish our financial problems and hold taxes down. Otherwise, there is no way to escape the potential decay of our city and compound the hurt for the majority of people who are unable to keep paying more in taxes. Again, thank you to all who have contacted me. Thank you for your kind words about how you liked the city as it was while I was mayor just a few years ago, when there was so much activity without ever raising taxes. Edward A. Hanna, former mayor of Utica, lives in Fayetteville. _____________________________________________ Mr Hanna, had you followed these words the City of Utica would be in a far better place. You traveled the world where parks and public space are in scale to their surroundings... but those that you placed in our midst are out of scale and serve your ego. One even required a mysterious fire that just sort of happened to be on a spot that you wanted a park. Another required a space that belonged to another. And then there is George Washington who is out of scale unto itself. And check out the alley from Genesee Street where a group of statues were to go ? But sad, you forgot the neighborhood parks where the children need the kind of space to learn about the environment if we are going to save the planet. You cheated the children of Pixley in major ways .... the only park that ever won any awards in Oneida County with the hands and love of 300 little children and 20 families. I could go on and on, you had such an opportunity. Edward Hanna, you will be remembered because you gave away the Utica Board of Water Supply without giving the people a referendum. Your words ring hollow. (Edited by Millicent at 9:18 am on Aug. 27, 2006)

"One even required a mysterious fire that just sort of happened to be on a spot that you wanted a park." Kind of like the mysterious fire on Varick St. about 6 months ago, right where the city wants to emulate Armory Square in Syracuse?? Just wondering...
