Moshier: Westmoreland's Bulldogs could use a test

Westmoreland’s football team is 2-0, but head coach Tim Gates may have a problem keeping his Bulldogs interested for the next few weeks.

In the Class D South, there may be too many easy pickings to do the Bulldogs any good. Take their Week 2 win over Oriskany, for instance. All-state running back Justin Becker touched the football eight times and scored five touchdowns, three on runs and two on pass receptions, and Westmoreland led 41-0 at the half. The final was 53-6.

Next up for the Bulldogs is Rome Catholic, and then Morrisville-Eaton and Hamilton, before ending the regular season with an Oct. 10 home game against Waterville. That Week 6 matchup should be worth watching, but between now and then, Westmoreland’s Bulldogs probably won’t break a sweat.

In the long run, that may hurt their chances of winning a third section title in four years. We shall see.
