Pitarresi: Not quite in love with Bills yet

I’m a Buffalo Bills fan.

I have been since the early 1960s, when the Bills began to get pretty good. (For many years before that, I was a New York Giants fan, and I remained so for a long time because the teams rarely or never played each other and it wasn’t a problem.) You might not remember, but every Western New Yorker – I’m one – sure does. The Bills were AFL champions in 1964 and 1965, and the fans were madly in love with them. And, of course, the fans were madly in love with them in the early 90s, when they went to four consecutive Super Bowls, even if they lost them all.

Now, it appears, the good times are back. The Bills are 4-0. Are the fans in love with them again? Pretty much, I think. Am I? I don’t give my heart away that easily. Clearly, the Bills are a good team. Quarterback Trent Edwards has been impressive in the clutch for an offense that is competent but not overpowering, Paul Poluszny and the defense look good, although they could be stronger against the run, and the team appears well balanced and solid all around.

It bothers me, though, that the Bills have had to come from behind in three of their four victories. It’s great that they had the ability to do that, but playing from behind is not a good habit.

So, I’m a Bills fan, and always will be, but I’m not yet in love the current team. I’ll let you know better in about a month.

The nice thing about the 4th quarter comebacks is that it seems as the the Bills get stronger as the games go on. They don't sag. They do not look exhausted. They remain aggressive and willing and able to make big plays and special teams never flag.

It is better to have loved and lost ... yadda yadda yadda.

I was born and raised in Hamburg, NY - five minutes from the Ralph or Rich Stadium as it was known forever.
4-0 doesn't mean much when you look at the early schedule of the Bills season where they do not have any division rivals as opponents.
The real test begins in Miami on the 26th and continues for 2 Sundays more. Also, the season really begins and ends in December.
Let's hope Buffalo fans have more to be happy about than just a white Christmas this year.
Let's GO BUFFALO!
The Bills make wanna shout!

I can agree they need some work... and that they haven't been truly tested by a top notch team yet... and their need to make comebacks worry me... but that doesn't mean you don't sound like all the haters. You should be ashamed to be from WNY... in fact you aren't anymore. True Bills fans and WNYer's don't need to be "in love" with the team to truly support them. thick and thin. 4-0 or 0-4... but when they REALLY start to light it up this year... feel free to 're-hop' on the bandwagon like so many will.

Hey lordcroft21,
Never said I wasn't a true blue believer, just stating the facts as an objective person.
No need to be putting me down with a personal attack. Oh yeah, that's typical for people born and bred in this area. Wish I was in WNY every day and knowing that I am always for the Bills.

Not sure if you like a team that was not expected to be all that great this year - but has gone 4-0 so far - until further into the season? Sounds like you're not a fan, but thats ok... but at least offer some analysis, huh?

Librarian - if anything... I agree with your post and my post was not intended to be aimed at you. I was even happy to see that you wrote "the Bills make me wanna shout" in your first and second post. Not to mention... make no mistake I am from Western New York, born and bred. My point... and perhaps I should have made this clear for all in my first post... is that its comments from the original blog such as: "Am I? I don’t give my heart away that easily." and "So, I’m a Bills fan, and always will be, but I’m not yet in love the current team. I’ll let you know better in about a month." that frustrate me as a Bills fan and a WNYer that has seen an economically depresed WNY area put their hearts on the line to the Sabres and the Bills, in constant emotional highs and lows depending on wins and losses of their pro sports teams each week, whether this is sad or not seems to be beside the point... am I certainly don't want it to seem like I am personally attacking anyone, not my style. If it seemed that way then I will offer my apology. However, from someone who puts their heart on their sleeve for the Bills, like so many WNYers do, its difficult to see someone from CNY who claims to be a Bills fan and WNYer say they are not in love with a team that's finally showing some potential after nearly a decades worth of lackluster seasons, no matter the outcome of the next months. How I feel - is that true Bills fans are with 'em, or you're not, and that people who have to chose to 'love' them or not are pandering and tend to enjoy riding the bandwagon... with no offense intended to any parties involved, including bloggers or journalists.
