Sunday is the best - and worst - racing day of the year
The names at the
Rick Mears, Gordon Johncock, Al Unser, A.J. Foyt. Everyone knew those guys, even if you only watched one open-wheel race a year. But on Sunday, Buddy Lazier will line up as the racer with the most experience at Indy – and his national profile is about the same as NASCAR truck series drivers like Johnny Benson and Ron Hornaday.
On Sunday, more people will tune in to watch the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 than the

You are right, but Indy racing is still better than NASCAR racing in my opinion. They cars go faster, they are sleeker, cooler, and unliek NASCAR where they want everybody bunched up, IRL racing allows for speed and excitement. I've been to six Indianapolis 500s and there is nothing better---and I wouldn't call myself a huge racing fan either.
How can you assume that the Indy 500 has lost it? You probably had nothing better to write about on Sunday but to make assumptions about the Indy 500 losing viewers. Did you look at the people in the stand Muder? Where you there? Every auto racing circuit is going to have new drivers and their names will become famous again. Sorry that the older guys can't race anymore cause they can't fit into the car. In Nascar, there can be drivers of many different body types. Indy is different, you need to stay in shape.
Besides Buddy Lazier may have the most indy experience but the newcomers like Graham Rahal and Marco Andretti are becoming popular and then there is Danica Patrick and the other ladies. I don't see Nascar with women. Once again Craig, you don't think when you write.
In agreeance with the 2 previous posts...There is something magical about Indy. Having grown up less than a mile from the track and experiencing the May madness on 16th and georgetown. There's nothing like it. Indy is the racing captial!!!
It's pretty obvious that you're not a race fan. If you wantched the 500 you would have heard that attendence is at an all time high. Indy seems to be as popular as ever.
I've been to an Indy 500 and grew up watching it, so I've always had an interest in the 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing'...
With to the recent snooze-fests of COT-style NASCAR racing and the constant stream of complaints about the cars and how bad they are from practically everyone in the NASCAR garage, open wheel racing is perhaps looking at its best opportunity to reclaim some of its lost audience...
But, in spite of the Champ Car/IRL merger, until you replace names like Duno, Viso, Roth, Simmons, and others who have 'bought' their way into the 500 and/or the IRL with REAL AMERICAN drivers like Levi Jones, Donny Schatz, and other drivers coming up the ranks who've been steered toward NASCAR, it won't matter how good the racing is...nobody will watch it.
