Mark Ainsworth likes
to get things done.
“That’s just my nature.
I don’t like things sitting around,” said Ainsworth, who’s a self-employed
optometrist, mayor of the village of Herkimer, as well as a 2003
Accent on Excellence honoree.
As if running his own business,
Herkimer Eye Care Center, and being mayor weren’t enough, Ainsworth
serves on numerous community boards.
He is the chairman of the
advisory board of the Salvation Army and vice president of the
Rotary Club.
He also works with area food
pantries to make sure they are well-stocked with food.
As a Eucharistic minister,
he travels to nursing homes once a month to administer communion
to residents unable to attend church.
Still, he was surprised to
find out he was being honored by Accent on Excellence.
“I was surprised to
find out I was even nominated,” Ainsworth said.
“They kept it a secret
from me. ... It’s so wonderful because you try so very hard to
give back to the community,” he said.
“And by no means do
you do something to be recognized. But it shows people know you
are out there doing this and it’s appreciated very much,” he said.
Ainsworth also has helped
oversee the building of Herkimer’s skateboard park, which is still
under construction.
And, as mayor, he also helped
revitalize Herkimer’s Main Street.
He also brought a full-time
recreation director back to the village.
“I’m a people person.
I believe that if you give, you get it back,” Ainsworth said.
In her nomination letter,
Mindy Barstein wrote:
“I have known Mark
for 10 years. In that time, he has involved himself with many
community groups with no financial reward. ... (As mayor,) he
has overseen the growth of the village with new businesses and
still shows ... concern for those smaller businesses who employ
many. ... He deserves this award.”
Ainsworth admits his days
are pretty full, but says he still finds time for what’s important.
“Obviously my first
priority is my profession. Mayor comes second and then the other
things I like to do,” he said.
What motivates him?
“I think it’s my love
for my community,” he said.
“I was born and raised
in Herkimer, so I think it’s important to give back,” he said.
